Sail Compare

Sail vs DigitalOcean

In this article you will learn about the key similarities and differences between Sail and DigitalOcean, and how Sail can be a great alternative to DigitalOcean.

Overview

DigitalOcean is a cloud hosting provider and WordPress is supported out of the box through the Marketplace, which allows you to quickly deploy a WordPress installation to a DigitalOcean server.

Sail also allows you to deploy WordPress to a DigitalOcean server with some additional crucial features, such as: support for more than one site, simple domain management and SSL, application and database backups and restores, deployments and rollbacks.

Sail is a great alternative to DigitalOcean's 1-click installer at no additional cost. It is completely open source and transparent, giving you the flexibility and freedom to host WordPress on your own terms. Visit Sail on GitHub to learn more.

Bandwidth Pooling

DigitalOcean allows bandwidth pooling, which means if you provisioned two servers with 1TB of bandwidth each, your total allowed monthly bandwidth is 2TB, regardless of which server is actually consuming it. Excess data transfer is billed at $0.01 per GB.

Free Trial

DigitalOcean provides a 60-day trial with up to $100 in credits. This is the equivalent of running a 4-core premium AMD/Intel CPUs with 8GB of RAM, 160 GB NVMe SSD and 5 TB of bandwidth for two months.

Sail Premium offers a 60-day money back guarantee.

Backup retention

DigitalOcean's backup service creates a full disk snapshot once every week and keeps the last four copies.

Sail Premium creates full site and database backups daily, has a 60-day retention policy, regardless of the server size or disk usage. On-demand backups are available both with the free version of Sail (full local backups) and Sail Premium (remote backups).

Support

DigitalOcean provides e-mail and community support. WordPress support is limited.

Sail provides product support via our Slack community. Paid WordPress support options are available through vetted Sail partners starting from $49/mo.
